At the first mooring site

It is the 5th day of our cruise. We are now in the eastern Indian Ocean around the equator.

Today we recovered and re-deployed an ocean mooring with acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP). The ADCP gives sound beams upward from 400 m depth, and observes currents in the upper ocean. We JAMSTEC have kept this observation for the 17 years (2000-2016)! The ADCP observation tells us monsoon-related ocean current, a change of ocean energy transport, and so the climate variability.

Thanks to the sophisticated performances by our technicians and crews, the deployment went very well (Photo-1).

We hope it will be a lonely but lovely observation for the ADCP. See you in future!
